Major success: IAF carries out successful firing of air-launched BrahMos cruise missile
PTC News Desk: The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully fired the air-launched variant of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in the Bay of Bengal, marking a huge success for indigenous weapon systems.
The BrahMos air-launched missile was tested from a Su-30MKI fighter jet, which is capable of launching BrahMos cruise missiles capable of hitting enemy targets at long ranges.
"The BrahMos air-launched missile was fired from a Su-30MKI fighter jet in the last few days. The aircraft had taken off with the missile from an air base in the southern peninsula and travelled over 1,500 Km to successfully strike a target from a longer range than before," defence officials stated.
The missile was a longer-range version of the supersonic weapon system, which was developed by India in collaboration with Russian industry.
According to sources, the Indian Air Force recently conducted two trials of the land attack missile system, and the results were quite satisfactory, with missiles hitting the target in the user trials.
India is also exporting the missiles to friendly foreign countries such as the Philippines, which would use them as coastal batteries.
The BrahMos Aerospace Corporation is also considering exporting the missiles to other countries in order to help Prime Minister Narendra Modi meet his export targets.
