Manipur extends internet ban amidst ongoing violence, security forces deployed for peace restoration

Imphal, June 06: The Manipur government has decided to extend the ban on internet services until June 10 in order to curb further disturbances in the violence-stricken state. The ban, which was initially imposed on May 3, will now remain in effect until 3 pm on June 10, according to an order issued by the state government on Monday evening.

The ongoing ethnic violence between the Meiteis, residing in and around Imphal valley, and the Kuki tribe, settled in the hills, stems from the Meiteis' demand to be included in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) category. Since the clashes began on May 3, over 70 lives have been lost in the confrontations.

To restore peace and maintain law and order, approximately 10,000 personnel from the Army and Assam Rifles have been deployed in the state. During his recent visit, Home Minister Amit Shah appealed to both the Meiteis and the Kukis to maintain calm, work towards peace, and restore normalcy in the region.

Furthermore, he urged the communities to remove road blockages, particularly on the Imphal-Dimapur National Highway-2, to ensure the uninterrupted supply of essential items. This highway passes through the Senapati district in the hills and connects to the capital Imphal in the valley, serving as the sole route for transporting supplies to various parts of the state. Frequent blockades on the highway have disrupted the flow of essential commodities, leading to increased costs and scarcity.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with the government and security forces working diligently to address the violence and restore peace in the region.
