Manipur fresh violence: Cop killed, weapons looted in clash with mobs
Manipur fresh violence: In Imphal West's Senjam Chirang, a Manipur police officer was killed by a sniper, and arms, including automatic guns, were looted in Bishnupur after mobs attacked security posts on Thursday.
The Keirenphabi Police outpost and Thangalawai Police outpost of the Manipur Armed Police second battalion were ransacked by a mob comprising men and women in Bishnupur district, resulting in the looting of weapons.
The mob attempted to seize arms from Heingang and Singjamei police stations, but their attack was thwarted by security forces.
In the areas of Koutruk, Haraothel, and Senjam Chirang, armed attackers and security forces engaged in gunfire, resulting in injuries to two people, including a security personnel.
In Senjam Chirang, a Manipur police officer was killed by a sniper, and a village volunteer was injured in the gun battle as suspected militants opened fire from nearby hill ranges in Koutruk and Senjam Chirang.
A large crowd of 500-600 people gathered at Phougakchao Ikhai, on the border between Bishnupur and Churachandpur districts, where security forces dispersed the mob using tear gas shells, resulting in around 25 minor injuries.
The police stated that the situation in the state remains volatile and tense with sporadic incidents of firing and unruly mobs in different places. A total of 129 checkpoints were established in both the hill and valley districts of Manipur, and approximately 1,047 people have been detained in connection with violations in various districts.
The northeastern state has been witnessing ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities following the Meitei's demand for Scheduled Tribes (ST) status, leading to hundreds of casualties and displacing thousands.
