Manipur viral video: Irom Sharmila calls for justice and stricter measures

Bengaluru, July 21: Iconic human rights activist Irom Sharmila, known for her 16-year-long protest of not eating in response to alleged army atrocities in Manipur, has expressed her deep concern and sorrow over the horrific incident where two women were paraded naked in Manipur. She called for the accused involved in the incident to be punished with life imprisonment without parole.

Speaking to mediapersons, Sharmila said that she feels "numb and disturbed" by the incident, emphasising that it is not about any particular community but rather an "inhuman" act that demands justice. She pointed out that such a tragedy could have been prevented had the Centre intervened at the right time.

The video of the incident, showing the two women being paraded naked on a road by a group of men in Manipur, went viral and triggered widespread outrage. This led to disruptions and calls for a detailed discussion on Manipur in both houses of the parliament.

A tribal organisation alleged that the two women were gang-raped in a field. Following the incident, four men have been arrested in connection with the crime. The victims claimed that the younger woman was brutally gang-raped in broad daylight, and they accused the police of abandoning them to the mob.

One of the alleged perpetrators, identified as Huirem Heradas Singh, was arrested by the state police after the video surfaced. He was seen in the video dragging one of the women while wearing a green T-shirt. The delay in arrests and action by the police has faced severe criticism.

The incident has sparked massive condemnation and calls for immediate action to ensure justice for the victims. Sharmila's voice adds to the growing demand for stringent punishment for the accused involved in this horrifying incident in Manipur.
