Mass layoffs: Air India lays off over 180 employees

Air India Mass layoffs: Air India laid off over 180 non-flying employees in recent weeks, citing the inability to use voluntary retirement schemes (VRS) and re-skilling opportunities.

Since Tata took over the airline in January 2022, efforts have been made to streamline its business model. According to a spokesperson, employees in non-flying functions were assigned roles based on organisational needs and individual merit.

Over the last 18 months, a comprehensive process was used to assess the suitability of all employees. During this phase, employees were also offered a number of Voluntary Retirement Schemes and reskilling opportunities, the spokesperson said.

According to the spokesperson, 1% of the employee base was unable to take advantage of the VRS or re-skilling opportunities and ended up having to part ways. The company stated that it is fulfilling all contractual obligations.
