Massive avalanche hits Jammu and Kashmir's Gulmarg; 1 foreigner dead

PTC Web Desk: An avalanche in Khilanmarg on Apharwat Peak in Gulmarg, Jammu and Kashmir, claimed the life of a foreigner on Thursday, as reported by an official. Currently, another foreign national is missing, while three others have been rescued and are receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.

The avalanche trapped at least five skiers, all of whom were foreigners. Following the incident, a search and rescue operation was initiated in Khilanmarg, with concerns that one skier might still be trapped under the snow, according to the official. The District Disaster Management Authority noted that the foreigners had ventured onto the ski slopes without the company of local residents.

The rescue efforts involve the Army and a patrolling team from the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Simultaneously, on Wednesday, another avalanche struck a precarious area of Sonamarg on the Srinagar-Leh road, resulting in the blockage of the Sindh stream.

Kashmir has experienced moderate to heavy snowfall in the past three days, heightening the risk of avalanches in the hilly and mountainous regions of the valley. The authorities continue to monitor and respond to the situation to ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the affected areas.
