Meghalaya honeymoon murder: Sonam claimed she was drugged, brought to UP says top UP cop

PTC News Desk: A day after Sonam Raghuvanshi was arrested for allegedly killing her husband during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, a top UP cop has revealed chilling details pertaining to the case.  UP Police's Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash made several revelations regarding the case, including Sonam's claim that "She was drugged and brought to Ghazipur" to present herself as the victim.

What started as a search operation to find the missing couple turned into a murder investigation after Raja Raghuvanshi's body was found in a deep gorge and his wife Sonam Raghuvanshi was pinned as prime suspect and allegedly accused of killing her husband.

"Sonam presented herself as a victim before the police, claiming she was drugged and brought to Ghazipur. She informed her family about this, knowing the police would eventually reach her. Around 3 am on Monday, she told her family that she was at a dhaba on the Ghazipur-Varanasi road. Her family immediately contacted the Madhya Pradesh police, who informed the local police, leading to Sonam's arrest. She was sent for a medical checkup and then to a One-Stop Centre. The Meghalaya police are now interrogating her and completing legal formalities" said DG Yash.

Meanwhile, Sahil Yadav, the owner of the Kashi Dhaba on the Varanasi-Ghazipur road in Uttar Pradesh, has also revealed crucial details.

"Last night around 1 a.m., Sonam Raghuvanshi was walking on the roadside and came to me asking for help. She asked for a mobile phone. When I asked what happened, she said her phone had been stolen, and it was urgent. She gave me a number, and I called for her. She spoke to her family," Yadav said.

"She was crying so hard that she could barely speak. She asked for water, and I gave her the water. Since she couldn't talk properly, I spoke to them as well. They requested that I contact the nearest police station to ensure her safety," he said.

Yadav further said that after a while he went on and asked her that what happened and how she reached Uttar Pradesh.

She said that in May, she got married. She and her husband had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon, and Raja was killed while trying to protect her from a group of men who attempted to snatch her jewellery," Yadav said, adding that she "did not remember how she got to Uttar Pradesh."

Shortly after the call to her family, local police were informed, and Sonam surrendered formally at the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur.
