Mumbai rain fury: Schools shut, Roads submerged in low-lying areas as heavy downpour wreak havoc
PTC News Desk: Mumbai continued to reel under heavy rainfall on Tuesday, with low-lying areas severely waterlogged, suburban train services running late, and traffic snarls reported across several parts of the city and its adjoining regions.
Schools and colleges remained closed in view of the incessant downpour and the red alert issued by the IMD, which predicted extremely heavy rainfall in parts of Mumbai and neighbouring districts. The Directorate of Higher Education also announced a holiday for all senior colleges in the Konkan belt, covering Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg.
Following Monday’s intense showers, Mumbaikars faced fresh disruptions on Tuesday morning as roads were submerged, slowing traffic, while BEST bus services had to be diverted at a few points. Local train operations were also delayed due to waterlogging on the tracks.
Areas such as Borivali, Andheri, Sion, Dadar, and Chembur witnessed heavy overnight rain that continued into the morning, flooding low-lying pockets like Gandhi Market. According to civic officials, the island city recorded heavier rainfall compared to the suburbs between 5 am and 6 am, with localities including Mumbai Central, Parel, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Dadar, and Worli receiving 40–65 mm of rain in just an hour, resulting in widespread flooding.
