'Nehru, Indira Gandhi doubted Indian potential': PM Modi

PTC News Desk: In a scathing critique of former Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted that both leaders harbored a low opinion of the Indian populace. Addressing the discussion on the Motion of Thanks to President Droupadi Murmu's address, Modi accused the Congress party, to which Nehru and Indira Gandhi belonged, of consistently underestimating the potential of Indians.

Highlighting excerpts from Nehru's speeches, Modi quoted, "Nehru had said, 'We do not work as hard as the Europeans, Japanese, Chinese, Russians, or the Americans. Do not think that these communities became prosperous by some magic. They have achieved this by hard work, by smartness.'" Modi argued that these statements reflected Nehru's belief that Indians were lazy and lacked intelligence, showcasing a lack of trust in their capabilities.

Turning his attention to Indira Gandhi, Modi recalled her statement from the Red Fort, "Unfortunately, it is our habit that when a good work is approaching completion, we become complacent. And when an obstacle comes, we lose hope. Sometimes it seems the whole nation has accepted defeat." Modi suggested that this sentiment implied a lack of faith in the resilience of the Indian people and their ability to overcome challenges.

Asserting his own confidence in the country and its citizens, Modi criticised the Congress party for its historical approach. He accused the Congress of considering themselves rulers and belittling the people, emphasising that such a mindset hindered the nation's progress.

Moreover, Modi held the Congress responsible for the current state of the Opposition, arguing that the party's failures and dominance prevented other political entities from performing effectively. He lamented the detrimental impact of dynasty politics on the parliamentary system and the overall health of the Opposition. Despite acknowledging the necessity of a robust Opposition, Modi contended that the Congress's approach had contributed to the erosion of trust in political leadership.

In a final swipe at the disarray within the opposition bloc, Modi commented on the ongoing conflicts between the Congress and regional parties like the Trinamool Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. Mockingly, he questioned the ability of these parties to garner public trust when they struggled to trust each other, implying that internal discord weakened their collective influence on the national stage.
