Newlywed woman dies by suicide in Bengaluru, husband flees 1,000 km, found dead in Nagpur hotel

PTC News Desk: A 36-year-old man travelled from Bengaluru to a hotel in Nagpur, Maharashtra—over 1,000 kilometres away—where he died by suicide on Saturday. His mother, who had accompanied him, also attempted suicide and is currently in critical condition.

The man, identified as Suraj Shivanna, allegedly took his life by hanging just two days after his wife, Ganavi, died by suicide in Bengaluru on Thursday. Following her death, police had registered a case against Suraj, accusing him of abetment to suicide based on a complaint lodged by her parents.

Suraj and Ganavi were married on October 29 in Bengaluru and later went to Sri Lanka for their honeymoon. However, the trip was cut short after a dispute, and the couple returned to Bengaluru last week. On Tuesday, Ganavi attempted suicide and was taken to hospital, where she was later declared brain dead and placed on ventilator support. She passed away on Thursday.

After her death, Ganavi’s family filed a complaint alleging dowry harassment by Suraj and his relatives. They also held a protest outside her in-laws’ residence, demanding their arrest.

Amid mounting pressure and public backlash in Bengaluru, Suraj and his mother, Jayanti, travelled to Nagpur. Suraj was later found dead in a hotel room. His brother, Sanjay Shivanna, informed Nagpur Police about the incident at a hotel on Wardha Road.

While Suraj’s body has been sent for post-mortem examination, his mother remains hospitalised and is battling for survival. Ganavi’s family has claimed that the 26-year-old was brought back to her parental home after allegedly facing “rejection and humiliation” from her in-laws.
