Northeast flash floods: Death toll reaches 30 as landslides sweep region after 2 days of torrential rain
PTC News Desk: At least 30 people have been killed across the Northeast region after constant monsoon rains triggering landslides and flashfloods.
In Assam's Guwahati, a mudslide triggered by heavy rainfall buried multiple homes, resulting in the deaths of five people, including three from the same family. The continuous downpour had destabilized the slopes, leading local authorities to issue renewed alerts. Additionally, flooding in the state claimed three more lives—two in Golaghat and one in Lakhimpur.
Over the past 24 hours, eight people have lost their lives in Mizoram, Tripura, and Meghalaya due to flash floods and landslides triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, according to officials.
In Manipur, three consecutive days of downpours have severely disrupted daily life in the state capital, Imphal. Widespread waterlogging has been reported, leading authorities to issue flood warnings and advise residents along the Imphal River floodplains to evacuate.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rain across the region and issued red and orange alerts for parts of Assam, along with orange and yellow alerts for other northeastern states.
