Parliament monsoon session LIVE UPDATES: Impeachment moves ahead as MPs submit notice seeking removal of Justice Varma
The impeachment process of Justice Yashwant Varma has been initiated after 145 MPs in Lok Sabha and 63 MPs in Rajya Sabha from both ruling government and opposition on Monday submitted a petition for the same.
A high-level meeting with PM Modi was held at Parliament House today. Senior ministers present in the meeting included Amit Shah, JP Nadda, Rajnath Singh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Nirmala Sitharaman, Kiren Rijiju, and Arjun Meghwal. The meeting likely discussed and made decisions regarding the Parliament session.
Members of Parliament today submitted a memorandum to the Lok Sabha Speaker to remove Justice Yashwant Varma. 145 Lok Sabha members signed the impeachment motion against Justice Verma under Articles 124, 217, and 218 of the Constitution.
MPs from various parties, including Congress, TDP, JDU, JDS, Jan Sena Party, AGP, SS (Shinde), LJSP, SKP, CPM, etc., signed the memorandum. Notable signatories include MPs Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, LoP Rahul Gandhi, Rajiv Pratap Rudy, PP Chaudhary, Supriya Sule, KC Venugopal, and others.
The Union Cabinet will meet at 1 pm on Tuesday in Parliament House under the chairmanship of PM Modi.

The opposition MPs have given notices to demanding suspension of house business to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, India's military response and subsequent political and diplomatic developments around the issue.

PM Modi says, "Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes. The world has been very attracted to this new form of Made in India military power. These days, whenever I meet people of the world, the world's attraction towards the Made in India weapons being made by India is increasing."
"This monsoon session is a celebration of victory. The whole world has seen the strength of India's military power. The target set by the Indian Army in Operation Sindoor was achieved 100%. Under Operation Sindoor, the houses of the masters of terrorists were razed to the ground within 22 minutes," he added.
Congress MP Jairam Ramesh took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of his address in the Parliament Session on Monday and asked him to be present to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor as he is scheduled to visit UK and Maldives from July 23-26, 2025.
Sharing a social media post, Jairam Ramesh criticised PM Modi, saying he rarely attends Parliament sessions and usually addresses the nation through media outside the Parliament Building.
Ramesh emphasised that the Prime Minister's presence is crucial during important discussions, particularly on issues like the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and President Trump's claims.
Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee and the Lok Sabha Business Advisory Committee are scheduled to meet at 1300 hours and 1430 hours, respectively, today. The Rajya Sabha Chairman will chair the Rajya Sabha Business Advisory Committee meeting, while the Lok Sabha Speaker will chair the Lok Sabha meeting. In both houses, the Business Advisory Committee meetings will finalize the agenda , deciding which business will be taken up and which issues will be discussed.
Parliament's monsoon session which is slated to begin on Monday will conclude on August 21 and will run for 32 days. In total, 18 meetings will be held in 32 days and more than 15 bills will be introduced. There will be no proceedings of Parliament on 13-14 August due to Independence Day celebrations.
Another topic that will be vehemently raised by the opposition is the Air India crash in Ahmedabad, which left 260 dead, and the issue of aviation safety. With US reports pinning the blame on pilots, a government response will provide insights on the full picture.

Besides the issues that are more likely to dominate the house proceedings, if there is one incident that is expected to witness a rare consensus cutting across party line is that of Justice Varma's impeachment. According to the parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju, the move has managed to garner support of over 100 MPs.
Prime Minister Modi to kickstart the session proceedings with address to media outlining the government's agenda and its priorities. This will be the first Parliament session after the Pahalgam attack and Operation Sindoor - the topics expected to dominate the proceedings.
Monsoon Session LIVE UPDATES: The Parliament is all set to convene its session with a stormy start on the cards as the Opposition is considering to corner the government on multiple fronts including national security and foreign affairs to electoral transparency and the situation in Manipur. The session begins on Monday.
After the customary all-party meeting held on Sunday, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju signalled that the government was open to discussions on key matters, including Operation Sindoor.
“We are open to discussions on all important issues like Operation Sindoor. These are matters of great national significance. The government is not shying away from debate, but it must happen under the rules and procedures laid down by Parliament,” Rijiju said.
Meanwhile on legislative front, the government is expected to take up 17 bills throughout the session which concludes on August 21.
