Patient dies in hospital as oxygen mask catches fire, Human Rights body seeks 'action taken report'

Rajasthan, July 14: A patient died after his oxygen mask allegedly caught fire during treatment at a government hospital in Rajasthan. The state's Human Rights Commission has taken cognizance of the case, describing the incident as "serious."

State Human Rights Commission chairman Justice GK Vyas issued a notice to the Kota Superintendent of Police, Kota Chief Health Officer (CHO) and Principal of Kota New Medical College Hospital where the patient died on Wednesday.

The Commission has asked the district administration to present the 'action taken report' as well as the factual report of the occurrence to it by July 24.

According to family members, Vaibhav Sharma, a resident of Anantpura Talab, died on Wednesday night after an oxygen mask over his face caught fire following Direct Current (DC) Cardioversion shock treatment.

Sharma was brought to the hospital four to five days ago for an intestinal rupture. His condition deteriorated after 11:30 p.m. on Wednesday, according to his relatives. The oxygen mask over his face caught fire and stuck to his neck in ICU during the Direct Current (DC) Cardioversion shock treatment.

According to the relatives, a spark from the electric switchboard started a fire, and the patient was burnt to death. According to the relatives, the medical staff failed to aid the patient during the emergency, which resulted in his death.

However, according to the hospital, he was given CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) an hour before the DC shock was administered to revive him.

The patient's body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

On Thursday, the patient's relatives gathered at the hospital, asking that the hospital management be held accountable for medical negligence.
