'Strict punishment for monstrous deeds, instil fear in criminals': PM Modi amid protest over Kolkata doctor's murder
PTC News Desk: As Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, he made an indirect reference to the Kolkata doctor r@pe and murder horror. The Prime Minister on Thursday called for stern punishment for those who execute these “monstrous deeds” against women.
In his 11th Independence Day address from the ramparts of Red Fort, PM Modi stated that he feels society's outrage over atrocities against women and that state governments must take this seriously.
He stated that women are taking up leadership roles in an array of professions, including the Air Force, Army, Navy, and space industry. "But there are some concerning developments. I want to express my grief at the Red Fort today. As a society, we must think seriously."
"The public is outraged by atrocities against our mothers and sisters. I am outraged. The country, society, and our state governments must take this seriously. Crimes against women must be investigated as quickly as possible, and those involved in demonic crimes must face heavy punishment at the earliest, this is vital to create faith in society," the Prime Minister said, apparently referring to the r@pe and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The Prime Minister went on to say that when there is violence against women, the media covers it extensively. "However, when such perverted people are punished, it is rarely widely reported in the news. Time demands that there be a wider discussion about consequences so that offenders are scared. It is critical to instil this fear," he stated.
The Prime Minister's statements come amid national outrage over the r@pe and death of a doctor in Kolkata. The case was moved to the CBI after the Calcutta High Court found that the city police had made no meaningful progress in their probe and that there was a possibility of evidence tampering.
