PM Modi in Assam: Prime Minister unveils statue of Lachit Borphukan

PM Modi in Assam: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a magnificent 84-foot-tall statue of Lachit Borphukan, a renowned general of the Royal Army of the Ahom Kingdom of Assam who defeated the Mughals.

Lachit Borphukan is remembered for his extraordinary victory over Aurangzeb's Mughal army at the Battle of Saraighat. The Ahom general fought tirelessly to limit the Mughal Empire's expansion in Assam.

According to the Assam government, the project included the construction of the Lachit and Tai-Ahom Museums, as well as a 500-seat auditorium. The project aims to highlight the virtues of Lachit Borphukan and raise awareness about him. It will also boost tourism and create employment opportunities.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also attended the event. "Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri Narendramodi Ji is dedicating the Statue of Valour: A magnificent tribute to Lachit Barphukan - to the people of Bharat at Jorhat," CM Sarma said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also made a 'tarpan' (offering to divine entities) in Jorhat today.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi rode an elephant in Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
