Rain, hailstorm hit North India as Western Disturbance peaks, IMD issues alert

PTC News Desk: North India is currently experiencing a new Western Disturbance, which is causing rain, thunderstorms, and hail in states like Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Uttar Pradesh. This bad weather is expected to continue until April 10.

Since late Monday night, Delhi-NCR has seen light rain, which has lowered temperatures and improved air quality. The weather department has issued a yellow alert for Tuesday and Wednesday, warning of more light rain and strong winds.

The weather system has become stronger over the past two days. Rajasthan had scattered storms and strong winds on Monday evening, and the system is at its strongest today.

The weather department has warned of rough conditions in many areas. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may see hail and strong winds of 30–60 km/h, while West Rajasthan could get winds up to 70 km/h. Punjab, Haryana, and East Rajasthan may experience thunderstorms with winds of 30–50 km/h. People are advised to stay careful as the storm moves across North India. Delhi will continue to see short spells of rain and gusty winds for the next two days. This weather change has given relief from early April heat and pollution, and air quality is likely to stay better due to ongoing winds.

A Western Disturbance is a weather system that forms outside the tropics, usually over the Mediterranean Sea, and moves towards India carrying moisture. It is responsible for winter rain in North India. This particular system is stronger than usual because it is getting extra moisture from the Arabian Sea, which has created another circulation over Rajasthan, making the clouds thicker and the system more intense than normal for this time of year.
