Rajya Sabha passes Women's Reservation Bill with 215 votes in favour

Women's Reservation Bill: Following extensive debate among MPs from all parties, the Rajya Sabha passed a historic Bill on Thursday that would reserve one-third of seats in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies for women. The Bill was passed with a majority vote by all members of the House: 215 in favour and none opposed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded the debate on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023, saying, “This bill will lead to a new confidence in the people of the country. It also shows the positive thinking of all the political parties which will give new energy to women’s empowerment.”

Earlier in the day, the PM hailed the clearance of the Women's Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha (on Wednesday) as a "golden moment in India's Parliamentary journey," and congratulated all members of all parties and their leaders for achievement.

The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) issued an official statement saying, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of the House today thanked all political parties for their support and meaningful debate regarding The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Eighth Amendment) Bill, 2023 in the Lok Sabha."
