Repolling today in 8 Arunachal Pradesh stations for Assembly elections following incidents of violence

PTC News Desk: Today, Arunachal Pradesh braces for re-election in eight polling stations, following episodes of violence during the initial phase of voting for both the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections on April 19. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has mandated this re-polling in response to reports of unrest and EVM damage during the assembly elections.

The voting process commenced at 6 am and will continue until 2 pm, with officials striving to ensure a smooth and peaceful electoral exercise despite the challenges posed by recent incidents.

Repolling to Take Place in the Following Booths:

1. Sario in the Bameng assembly constituency, located within East Kameng district.

2. Longte Loth under the Nyapin assembly seat in Kurung Kumey district.

3. Dingser, Bogiya Siyum, Jimbari, and Lengi polling booths under the Nacho constituency in Upper Subansiri district.

4. Bogne and Molom polling booths under the Rumgong assembly constituency in Siang district.

Phase 1 Records 76.44% Voter Turnout

In the initial phase of elections held on April 19, approximately 76.44% of the total 8,92,694 voters exercised their franchise to elect 50 MLAs from the 60-member assembly in the northeastern state. Notably, the ruling BJP secured victories in 10 assembly seats uncontested.

Repolling Conducted in 11 Manipur Booths

Following the Election Commission's directive due to incidents of violence at 11 booths during the first phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, repolling took place in parts of conflict-ridden Manipur.

As per the orders issued by the ECI and Manipur's Chief Electoral Officer, repolling was conducted across 11 polling booths on Monday, April 22. This decision was prompted by disturbances, including an episode where miscreants opened fire at a polling station.

Officials reported an 81.6 per cent voter turnout during the repolling at 11 polling stations within the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha constituency. Importantly, no incidents of disturbance or violence were reported at any of the polling stations, according to election officials.

During the first phase, the conflict-prone region of Manipur witnessed incidents of firing, intimidation, and EVM destruction at select polling stations, with allegations of booth capturing also emerging. Despite these challenges, Manipur recorded a turnout of 72 per cent across its two Lok Sabha constituencies - Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur - during the Friday elections.
