Republic Day 2025 Live Updates: The celebrations for 76th Republic Day commenced as PM Modi leads the nation in in saluting martyrs at the war Memorial in New Delhi. The stage is set at Kartavya Path for the ceremonial parade during which the country will showcase its military prowess and rich cultural heritage.
Besides VVIP dignitaries, members of the Paralympic contingent, sarpanches from top-performing villages, handloom artisans and forest and wildlife conservation workers are among the nearly 10,000 special guests who have been invited to witness the 76th Republic Day Parade.
While 75 years of the enactment of the Constitution is the focus of celebrations this year, the theme for the tableaux is 'Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas'.
Republic Day commemorates the historic moment when India officially became a republic. On this day in 1950, the Indian Constitution, which had been adopted by the Constituent Assembly on January 26, 1950, came into force.
The first Constituent Assembly session was held on December 9, 1946 while the last one took place on November 26, 1949. The Drafting Committee of the Constitution was headed by Dr BR Ambedkar.
On January 26, the country marks the national holiday commemorating the enforcement of the Constitution, the date on which the Indian National Congress announced Purna Swaraj from British rule. The resolution also marked the beginning of a large-scale nationwide political movement against colonial rule. The day of January 26 celebrates the spirit and soul of a sovereign nation.’
