Rohtak ASI's family refuses cremation, demands arrest of late IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's wife
PTC News Desk: Tensions flared in Rohtak after the family of Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sandeep Kumar, who died by suicide, refused to hand over his body to the police and instead took it to their native village. The family has demanded the arrest of IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar — wife of the late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar — alleging her involvement in Sandeep’s death.
According to the family, ASI Sandeep was being “harassed” following his arrest of the late IPS officer’s gunman in a bribery case. They claimed that Sandeep had told them about the harassment just two days before he took his own life.
“Our brother is a martyr who fought against corruption, just as Bhagat Singh fought against British rule,” said Sandeep’s cousin, Shishpal Lathar. He also urged the government to probe Y. Puran Kumar’s alleged assets, estimated at ₹2,000–₹3,000 crore, calling for a “fair and transparent investigation.”
The family said they learned of Sandeep’s death through a television broadcast. “We turned off the TV after seeing his photo. He had been living in Rohtak for five or six years. His grandfather fought in all three wars of 1965, his father was a police inspector, and now he has left behind his wife, mother, a seven-year-old son, and two daughters,” Shishpal said.
Sandeep’s body was discovered near a tubewell along the Rohtak–Panipat road on Tuesday. Police recovered a three-page note and a video message in which he accused the late IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar of corruption and abuse of authority. In the note, Sandeep expressed fear of being falsely implicated and said he was ending his life to demand a “neutral investigation.”
In his video, Sandeep alleged, “After this officer took charge, he began engaging in caste politics, removing honest personnel, and appointing corrupt individuals who extorted money and even harassed women officers.”
Rohtak SP Surendra Singh Bhoria described Sandeep as “a sincere and diligent officer” and confirmed that a forensic team had been called in. “The investigation is underway,” he stated.
Sandeep’s death has added a new dimension to the ongoing probe into the suicide of IPS officer Y. Puran Kumar, who had left behind a nine-page note accusing senior police officers of harassment and caste-based bias. Following his death, his wife, IAS officer Amneet Puran Kumar, filed a complaint against 13 senior officials, alleging abetment of suicide under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
