Slight recovery in Delhi's air, still at 'upper end of Very Poor' category

New Delhi, November 6: After three consecutive days of 'severe' air quality in Delhi this week, the national capital's air quality improved to 'upper end of Very Poor' on Sunday, according to the forecast system SAFAR.

Despite the fact that Delhi's air quality has improved from 'severe' to 'very poor,' it is still at an alarming level on Sunday morning, with the city's overall Air Quality Index (AQI) standing at 339.

The National Capital Region (NCR) experienced poor air quality, with Noida recording an AQI of 349, placing it in the 'very poor' category, and Gurugram recording an AQI of 304, also placing it in the 'very poor' category, according to data released by SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research) India.

Air Quality Indexes ranging from 0 to 100 are considered good, while those ranging from 100 to 200 are considered moderate, those ranging from 200 to 300 are considered poor, those ranging from 300 to 400 are considered very poor, and those ranging from 400 to 500 or higher are considered severe.

The recurring issue of farm fires from neighbouring states contributed 21% of the PM2.5 in Delhi, which was 34% on Friday.

The air quality index is expected to improve in the coming days, according to the forecast.

"Overall AQI today indicates 'upper end of Very Poor' air quality. AQI is likely to improve due to unfavourable upper level (700-1000 m) wind flow from stubble burning areas preventing inflow of pollutants to Delhi. Stubble emissions with a fire count of 1761 contribute 21 per cent to PM2.5 in Delhi," said SAFAR.
