Unnao rape case: Accused Kuldeep Sengar's daughter writes open letter after Supreme Court stays bail
PTC Web Desk: Ishita Sengar, daughter of former BJP leader and Unnao rape case convict Kuldeep Singh Sengar, has written an emotional open letter seeking what she called “justice” for her father, claiming that her family has faced years of threats, abuse and social ostracisation.
In a lengthy post on social media platform X, Ishita said she was writing “as a daughter who is exhausted, frightened and slowly losing faith,” adding that her family has been subjected to relentless harassment for the past eight years. Questioning public perception, she asked what kind of “power” leaves a family “voiceless” for nearly a decade.
To
The Hon’ble Authorities of the Republic of India,
I am writing this letter as a daughter who is exhausted, frightened, and slowly losing faith, but still holding on to hope because there is nowhere else left to go.
For eight years, my family and I have waited. Quietly.… — Dr Ishita Sengar (@IshitaSengar) December 29, 2025
The letter came at a time when the Supreme Court stayed a recent Delhi High Court order that had suspended Sengar’s life sentence and granted him bail in the 2017 Unnao rape case.
Delhi HC bail order stayed
On Monday, the Supreme Court stayed the December 23 order of the Delhi High Court, which had suspended Sengar’s life sentence pending disposal of his appeal. The apex court issued a notice to Sengar on a plea filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), seeking his response.
Earlier, a Division Bench of the Delhi High Court comprising Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar had granted bail to Sengar, citing that he had already spent over seven years and five months in prison. The court also observed that the aggravated offence under Section 5(c) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was not made out.
Sengar was directed to furnish a personal bond of Rs 15 lakh along with three sureties of the same amount.
In her open letter, Ishita said her identity has been reduced to “the daughter of a BJP MLA,” and alleged that she has received threats and messages telling her she should be raped or killed merely for existing.
She claimed that her family has been “stripped of dignity piece by piece” and subjected to daily abuse, mockery and dehumanisation since the case came to light.
Survivor welcomes Supreme Court stay
The survivor, meanwhile, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision to stay the High Court order.
Case background
Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted by a trial court in December 2019 under the POCSO Act and sentenced to life imprisonment for the remainder of his life for raping a minor in 2017. The case had drawn nationwide attention due to allegations of political influence, intimidation and attacks on the survivor’s family.
