'Unusual sound, felt like bridge collapsed': Residents recount horror as earthquake jolts Delhi-NCR

PTC News Desk: Residents of Delhi and National Capital Region were jolted by strong tremors after earthquake of magnitude 4.0 struch national capital and adjoining areas on Monday morning. 


According to the National Center of Seismology, the epicentre of the quake, which occurred at around 5.35 am, was near Durgabai Deshmukh College of Special Education in Dhaula Kuan and struck at a depth of 5 km.

The strong tremors prompted residents of high rise buildings in Noida, Greater Noida, Gaziabad etc to quickly move out. Panick gripped residents were seen waiting outside their building for quite a while before heading back. 

The epicentre of the quake was in the Jheel Park area of Dhaula Kuan and there were some reports of people hearing a loud sound as the ground shook.

A resident of Ghaziabad said, "The tremors were so strong. I have never felt like this ever before. The entire building was shaking."

"There was an unusual sound. Many others are reporting it as well. Any idea what the sound was? Have never heard a sound during an earthquake before," one user tweeted.

While one person said, "we also heard a thunder-like sound", another user posted, "It felt like rumbling, and we were shaken out of sleep. The rumble was loud and deep. Earthquake with a sound is the most scariest thing I have ever experienced in my life!"

Meanwhile, caretakers of Jheel Park in Dhaula Kuan claim that the 4.0-magnitude earthquake this morning uprooted a 20-25-year-old tree at the park. The epicentre of the earthquake was in Dhaula Kuan.
