Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operation successful, all 41 workers evacuated
Uttarkashi tunnel rescue: The Uttarkashi tunnel rescue operation, which was underway for 17 days, has been successful. All 41 workers, who were trapped underground in a tunnel in Uttarakhand's Silkyara, were rescued late Tuesday.

The major development came after a frantic 17-day multi-agency operation that relied, in the final stretch, on the banned manual "rat-hole"-mining technique.
It took some time for each worker to re-acclimatise to surface conditions, where the temperature is currently around 14 degrees Celsius.
Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force, or NDRF, had first gone down the pipe to assess the trapped men's conditions and guide them through rescue procedures. Each worker was strapped to a stretcher, which was then manually pulled up 60 metres of rock and debris.
Visuals from the rescue scene showed an ambulance leaving the scene.

The ambulances - 41 in total, one for each worker - will be given a 'green corridor' to reach emergency medical facilities set up in Chinyalisaur, about 30 kilometres away.
