Why Arvind Kejriwal was arrested just before Lok Sabha elections? Supreme Court questions ED
PTC News Desk: The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on why Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was arrested just before the Lok Sabha elections. Notably, Delhi CM Kejriwal had challenged his arrest in the Delhi liquor policy case.
Justice Sanjeev Khanna asked the ED to clarify why the question of the timing of the arrest came up, and whether the central agency can initiate criminal proceedings without first going through judicial proceedings in the matter.
"No attachment action has been taken so far in this case, and if it has been done, then show how Kejriwal is involved in the matter...Tell me, why the arrest before the general elections?" Justice Khanna said.
The Supreme Court remarked that in the case involving former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, investigators claimed to have found proof, while nothing was shown in Kejriwal's case.
"Liberty is exceedingly important; we can't deny that," the Supreme Court remarked, referring to Kejriwal's arrest timing.
The court has asked that ED prepare a response by Friday afternoon.
Earlier this month, the Delhi High Court upheld Arvind Kejriwal's arrest, stating that the agency had no other option because he had not cooperated with the investigation.
