An uptick in such cases is a serious issue for society and is also raising questions on the law-and-order situation in the nation.

In the recent horrific, shocking and unsettling incident, a married woman tied to a tree, her hair chopped off, and her face blackened on the orders of a local panchayat for allegedly having an affair with a man from her village.

The shocking incident unfolded in Chhotki Ibrahimpur village under the Hatigaon police station area on Sunday and police have arrested 15 people in connection with the case, while five others are still at large.

The woman's husband, who was living in Mumbai, returned to the village after learning about his wife's alleged affair. The couple has three children together.

Following the panchayat's orders, the woman was tied to a tree, had her hair cut off, and her face blackened with soot, as stated by Additional Superintendent of Police (Western), Sanjay Rai.
