Chandigarh, January 4: The Punjab Government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has fulfilled pre-poll promise of providing free power to every household.

This was stated by Punjab Power Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO on Wednesday. He accused previous governments of betraying people with fake promises to garner votes. The Punjab Cabinet minister said Bhagwant Mann-led AAP government had fulfilled the promise of zero electricity bill in the very first year of their tenure.

"At least 600 units of electricity bimonthly/300 units of electricity monthly have been granted for all domestic consumers, with annual subsidy benefit of Rs 5,629 crore along with continuation of subsidy of Rs 3 per unit up to 7KW for domestic consumers with annual benefit of Rs 1,278 crore," he said.

Harbhajan Singh ETO claimed that about 90 per cent households were now getting zero electricity bills, which was expected to increase by the month-end. Besides, providing free power to all residential units, all pending bills up to December 31, 2021 had been waived. All such disconnected connections had been restored, added the minister.

The Power Minister alleged that previous governments lured farmers with free power for tubewells, but they were never given uninterrupted power supply due to which they had to face problems for irrigation.

The Punjab minister claimed that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann-led government in the state had not just continued free power to agricultural consumers, but for the first time ensured eight hours of regular power supply during the paddy season without any power cut.

In another incentive for farmers, the government had reduced tubewells' load enhancement fee from Rs 4,750 BHP to Rs  2,500 BHP, which resulted in benefitting 1,87,000 farmers.

Harbhajan Singh ETO said with the concerted efforts of the state government, the Pachwara coal mine had been made operational, which would help save Rs 500 crore annually.
