AAP dissolves Haryana unit with immediate effect

New Delhi, January 25: Aam Aadmi Party has dissolved its Haryana unit, the party announced on Wednesday.

"ANNOUNCEMENT. The entire organisation structure of @AAPHaryana stands dissolved with immediate effect. We will announce the new office bearers soon," AAP's official Twitter handle posted.

The move foreshadows a major organisational shake-up by the state's Arvind Kejriwal-led party, which will face elections next year.

Following the AAP's landslide victory in neighbouring Punjab last year, rival political leaders rushed to join the party.

The AAP's victory in Punjab was viewed as the party's first major step toward expanding into other states, particularly Haryana and Himachal Pradesh.

AAP convenor Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann headlined rallies and roadshows in Gujarat ahead of the Assembly elections last year. However, despite a strong campaign, the party was only able to win 5 Assembly seats in the western state.

In April of last year, in the presence of Kejriwal, Congress' former Haryana chief Ashok Tanwar joined the AAP in the national capital.

Former Haryana Congress leader Nirmal Singh and his daughter Chitra also joined the AAP, following in his footsteps.

In welcoming the father-daughter team to the AAP, Kejriwal stated that all workers of the Haryana Democratic Front, led by Nirmal Singh, were welcome.

The Haryana Democratic Party later merged with the AAP.

Last May, the Delhi Chief Minister paid a visit to Haryana and held a rally in Kurukshetra.
