Earlier in the day, a five-member Constitution Bench, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, upheld the government's move to revoke Jammu and Kashmir's special status under Article 370, deeming it a "temporary" provision that no longer retained relevance post its accession to India in 1947. The court directed the restoration of statehood at the earliest and mandated the Election Commission to conduct polls in the region by September 2024.
