Congress Revanth Reddy to be new Chief Minister of Telangana
PTC News Desk: Anumula Revanth Reddy, who led the Congress to a landslide victory in Telangana, was formally elected as the party's leader this evening, clearing the way for him to become the state's next Chief Minister. The oath ceremony will take place on Thursday, according to senior Congress leader KC Venugopal.
The decision was made this evening at a meeting of senior party leaders presided over by party chief Mallikarjun Kharge. The meeting was attended by Rahul Gandhi, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, and Telangana Congress in-charge Manikrao Thakre.
Revanth Reddy, the vibrant face of the Congress campaign, is well-traveled, having worked for the BJP's student wing, the BRS (then the Telangana Rashtra Samithi), and the Telugu Desam Party.
He now faces a difficult task not only of running the government but also of consolidating and expanding the party's gains ahead of the Lok Sabha election next year. There's also the Assembly election in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh, which is also scheduled for next year.
Reddy's rise to prominence began in 2021 when he was appointed as the leader of the Congress' Telangana unit, a significant advancement for someone who had only joined the party four years before. The number of times he shared stage space with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi during campaign events demonstrated the party's regard for him.
Reddy, a strong young man, has since galvanised the Congress in Telangana; the ceremony installing him as President of the party's state unit was attended by hundreds, and he was a constant presence on the streets, leading protests against the then-ruling BRS on a variety of issues.
