Lok Sabha Polls 2024 | Congress candidate Kanhaiya Kumar assaulted while campaigning in Delhi
Kanhaiya Kumar assaulted : In a shocking and unfortunate incident, the Congress candidate for North East Delhi Kanhaiya Kumar was assaulted by a group of seven to eight people who also threw black ink at him while he was campaigning in Delhi.
Several videos of attack went viral on social media where two alleged attackers released videos bragging about attacking the Congress leader, claiming they did so because he had made statements supporting the breakup of the country and criticised the Indian Army.
The assaulting videos also depicts that as Congress candidate exited the office, a crowd gathered and initially garlanded him. Amidst this, a young man approached him under the guise of garlanding him but then suddenly slapped him. Others in the crowd threw ink at him. Party workers present at the scene caught and thrashed the young man.
The complaint of such a shocking assault was filed by the AAP councillor from Brahmapuri, Chhaya Gaurav Sharma in which she stated that she and Kumar was leaving the party office in Kartar Nagar when seven to eight individuals garlanded Kumar, threw ink on him, and then assaulted him. She reported that three to four women were also injured, and a woman journalist fell into a drain.
Chhaya Gaurav Sharma alleged that the attackers dragged her to a corner using her stole and threatened to kill her and her husband.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police officials confirmed that they have received Sharma's complaint. They are currently verifying the videos and an investigation is already underway.
In videos released after the incident, two of the alleged attackers, one of whom can be seen holding a garland in the footage, showed their reddened hands and explained their actions by claiming Kanhaiya Kumar had raised slogans about breaking the country into parts. This reference pertains to the alleged slogans raised at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in 2016, when Mr. Kumar was the JNU Students' Union president.
"We have responded with our attack," the two men said. Calling themselves 'Sanatani lions,' they claimed Kumar had also insulted the Indian Army and asserted that they had "treated" him accordingly.
