Lok Sabha polls 2024: Mamata Banerjee set to announce TMC's candidates list at Kolkata rally today
PTC News Desk: Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, is gearing up to kickstart the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s campaign for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections with a grand rally titled 'Jana Garjan Sabha' at the iconic Brigade Parade Grounds in Kolkata. Scheduled for today, the event will not only mark the commencement of TMC's electoral drive but also unveil the party's list of candidates for all 42 constituencies of the state.
The rally is expected to be a massive affair, drawing in crowds of six to eight lakh supporters along with numerous block-level leaders from various districts across West Bengal. Mamata Banerjee, along with TMC's General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, will be the focal points of the event, delivering speeches to galvanize their supporters and set the agenda for the upcoming elections.

In anticipation of the rally, Mamata Banerjee took to social media, posting a video on X (formerly known as Twitter), urging the people of Bengal to join the march. In her message, she emphasized the strength and resilience of Bengal, cautioning against mistaking its patience for weakness. She underscored the significance of the rally as a historic moment for the state, calling upon the people to unite and participate in shaping the future of Bengal.
The rally itself is designed to be inclusive and interactive, featuring three platforms, including a cross ramp, aimed at fostering greater engagement and facilitating closer interaction between leaders and supporters. The overarching theme of the event revolves around the issue of the central government allegedly withholding financial dues owed to the state—a contentious matter that has been at the forefront of West Bengal's political landscape for the past two years.
Abhishek Banerjee, in anticipation of the rally, expressed confidence in the massive turnout expected, highlighting the enthusiasm among both supporters and grassroots leaders from across the state. The event promises to be not just a political spectacle but also a platform for articulating the aspirations and grievances of the people of West Bengal as they gear up for the crucial Lok Sabha elections.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) didn't miss the opportunity to take a swipe at the Trinamool Congress (TMC)'s grand rally, labeling it as the party's "farewell rally." Suvendu Adhikari, a senior BJP leader, didn't hold back in his criticism, branding TMC's leaders as "goons and corrupt" while forecasting their "impending downfall."
This critique from the BJP comes hot on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent visit to Bengal, where he didn't mince words in his attack on the Mamata Banerjee-led party. Addressing a fervent crowd, Modi accused the TMC of "looting" the people of Bengal, painting a grim picture of alleged corruption within the state government.
"Modi sends the money for MNREGA wages from Delhi but the TMC government here has looted you at every step," Modi asserted, highlighting what he perceived as financial mismanagement under the TMC regime. He went on to allege the proliferation of fake job cards, claiming that 25 lakh such cards were distributed to undeserving individuals to appease the TMC's favored few.
In Modi's narrative, the TMC government stood accused of diverting funds meant for the impoverished into the pockets of corrupt elements, rather than aiding those truly in need. This rhetoric, delivered on the heels of TMC's mega rally, underscores the escalating political tensions between the ruling party in Bengal and its formidable opponent, setting the stage for a fiercely contested electoral battle in the days to come.
