Patna HC orders Congress to remove controversial AI video of PM Modi and late mother
PTC Web Desk: The Patna High Court on Wednesday directed the Congress party to remove an AI-generated video featuring Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother, Heeraben Modi, which had been circulated on social media by the party’s Bihar unit.
Acting Chief Justice PB Bajantri instructed the Congress to take down the video from all online platforms. The 36-second clip, posted by the Bihar Congress on September 10 and clearly marked as "AI GENERATED," depicts the Prime Minister imagining a conversation with his late mother, who allegedly criticises his political decisions in poll-bound Bihar.
The video drew widespread condemnation from the BJP and its allies, who described it as a "shameful" political tactic aimed at the Prime Minister. Critics suggested the release of the video was politically motivated ahead of the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.
The Congress, however, defended the content, stating that it did not intend to disrespect PM Modi or his mother.
Following a complaint by Sanket Gupta, convenor of the BJP Delhi Election Cell, the Delhi Police registered a case against the Congress and its IT cell on September 13. The complaint, lodged at the North Avenue police station, described the visuals as defamatory, claiming they insult both PM Modi’s mother and the concept of motherhood.
This controversy follows another incident in August, during the ‘Voter Adhikar Yatra’ in Darbhanga, when slogans reportedly targeting PM Modi and Heeraben Modi were allegedly chanted from the stage. PM Modi had strongly condemned the incident, calling it "unimaginable" and "an insult to all mothers, sisters and daughters of the country," while emphasising that his mother had "nothing to do with politics."
