Security cover reduced at Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee residences after TMC’s electoral defeat
PTC Web Desk: Security deployment outside the residences and offices linked to outgoing West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek Banerjee was significantly reduced on Wednesday morning, just days after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) lost power in the state.
According to senior police officials, the revised arrangements came into effect from 6.30 am and covered three key locations: Mamata's residence at Harish Chatterjee Street, the party headquarters on Kalighat Road and Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street. Additional security measures that had been put in place during the tenure of the TMC government were withdrawn, leaving only the standard Z category protection.
Officials confirmed that high-end security infrastructure, including automated scissor barricades installed near the Kalighat residence, has been dismantled. These have now been replaced with simpler, manually operated guardrails. The move follows an internal directive issued by the Joint Commissioner of Police (Headquarters), signalling a rollback of heightened security protocols.
The changes come in the wake of the recent Assembly elections, where the BJP secured a decisive victory, winning 207 out of 294 seats. The All India Trinamool Congress, which had been in power for 15 years, was reduced to 80 seats. The Election Commission of India has ordered repolling in one constituency.
In a related development, state Advocate General Kishore Datta tendered his resignation to Governor RN Ravi Datta, who had resumed office in December 2023, had earlier also served in the same role between 2017 and 2021.
