Smriti Irani trails by over 1,53,000 votes in UP's Amethi, triggers meme fest
Lok Sabha Elections 2024 Result: Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani is trailing in Uttar Pradesh’s Amethi constituency against Congress' Kishori Lal by a massive margin. As of 5:00 pm, the Congress candidate is 1,53,661 votes ahead of Irani, who defeated Rahul Gandhi in 2019.
Exit polls predicted a close race between Irani and Sharma for the high-profile seat.
Amethi, once a Gandhi family stronghold, went to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2019, with Irani giving Rahul Gandhi a stunning defeat.
Amethi's fate was sealed at the fifth phase of the elections on May 20th, which saw a 54.40% voter turnout.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Congress suffered its greatest setback in Amethi, where Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi by 55,000 votes.
When Congress leader Rahul Gandhi decided to contest the election from Raebareli rather than Amethi, the choice rippled across the political landscape. Smriti Irani was quick to jump at the opportunity and declared that history had been made. However, Congress has placed Kishori Lal Sharma, a long-time Gandhi family supporter, against Smriti Irani.
