Punjab Government declares holiday on Sept 12 to commemorate Saragarhi Day.
September 12 has been declared as a public holiday to commemorate the Saragarhi Day in memory of the historic battle of Saragarhi by the Punjab Government.
A notification in this regard has been issued. Battle of Saragarhi was fought before the Tirah Campaign on 12 September 1897 between Sikh soldiers of the British Indian Army and Pashtun Ozakzai tribesmen.
The British Indian contingent comprised 21 Sikhs of the 36th Sikhs (now the 4th Battalion of the Sikh Regiment), who were stationed at an army post attacked by around 10,000 Afghans.
‘September 12 had been declared as a public holiday in all offices, boards and corporations, institutions and educational institute of the Punjab government under this notification.’ Revealing this here on Wednesday, an official spokesman said.
