AAP names prominent industrialist Rajinder Gupta as candidate for Punjab Rajya Sabha seat
PTC News Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party has announced prominent industrialist Rajinder Gupta as its candidate for Punjab Rajya Sabha. The by-election is scheduled for October 24 and last date for filing nomination is October 13.
He was appointed as the Vice Chairman of the Planning Board in 2022, and as Chairperson of the advisory committee of the temple in Patiala in August this year. He has remained the Vice Chairman/ Deputy Chairman of the Planning Board during both the previous Congress and SAD-BJP regimes and has continued to enjoy the stature of a cabinet minister.
Given that the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) holds a commanding majority of 93 seats in the Vidhan Sabha, and only 60 votes are required for victory, Gupta’s election win is virtually guaranteed if voting takes place. However, indications suggest that the state is likely to continue its long-standing tradition of electing Rajya Sabha (RS) members unopposed.
The RS seat became vacant following the resignation of Sanjeev Arora, who stepped down earlier this year to contest the Ludhiana West bypoll and was subsequently inducted into Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s Cabinet.
