G-20 summit in Amritsar to take place as per schedule: Chief Secy

Chandigarh, March 5: Refuting the reports that there were plans to shift the G-20 meeting venue from Amritsar due to Ajnala violence, Punjab Chief Secretary VK Janjua has said that the key event will take place as per schedule.

“I have confirmed at the highest level and the summit is as scheduled at Amritsar,” the Chief Secretary said.


Aam Aadmi Party MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney also clarified that the event will be held as per schedule.

Taking to Twitter, the MP said, “Happy to inform that as of now @g20org meeting is confirmed at #Amritsar during 15-17 Mar as scheduled. Punjab is fully capable of hosting an international event & one stray Incident cant be reflectionof State it will be a memorable event.”

“As soon as heard rumours I swung into action since mrng called mea, ministry of education,g20 secretariat. There was a discussion on law & order but good sense prevailed and G20 meet is happening in Amritsar as scheduled,” Vikram Sahney further added.

Meanwhile, the Press Information Bureau also released information about the international event on Sunday.

According to the press release, the first Labour 20 (L20) meeting is scheduled to take place in Amritsar, Punjab from March 19  to 20, 2023.

L20 is one of the G20 engagement groups. It includes leaders and representatives of trade union centres of G20 countries. They provide analyses and policy recommendations aimed at addressing labour-related issues.

Under India's G20 presidency, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) is the lead national trade union centre in organising the L20 inception meeting. Apart from the meeting, the L20 participants will be taken to various excursion sites to showcase Amritsar's rich cultural heritage.

Earlier, MP Jasbir Singh Dimpa claimed that Centre was considering moving the G-20 Summit outside of Punjab under the pretext of the Ajnala clash.
