High Court orders Rs 2 lakh salary deduction from 4 senior officials, including DGP Gaurav Yadav, for contempt
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has ordered the deduction of Rs 2 lakh from the salaries of four senior Punjab government officials, including DGP Gaurav Yadav and Transport Department Secretary Pardeep Kumar, for failing to comply with earlier court directions.
As per the court’s order, Rs 50,000 will be deducted from the salary of each official and deposited into the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund. The other two officials facing similar action are Manish Kumar (IAS), State Transport Commissioner, and Jitendra Jorwal (IAS), Deputy Commissioner of Sangrur.
These orders were passed in response to non-compliance with directions issued during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL). Earlier, the same officials were fined Rs 1 lakh each and instructed to deposit the amount promptly while filing a compliance affidavit. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for November 27.
Justice Sudeepti Sharma observed that the officials' conduct reflected a “continued and deliberate contempt” of judicial orders. The court made these remarks while hearing a contempt petition filed by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Mini Transport Welfare Association.
The contempt petition pertains to the alleged violation of the High Court’s September 20, 2023 order, which directed the authorities to take regular and effective action against illegally modified vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.
The court noted that despite multiple opportunities, the officials failed to submit a satisfactory compliance report. It also pointed out that instead of depositing the Rs 1 lakh fine imposed earlier on September 2, 2025, the officers had filed two applications seeking modification and withdrawal of the penalty order. The court dismissed these applications as baseless, terming them “factually incorrect statements and a disregardful attitude toward the judicial process.”
