Issue of fake SC certificates: Dalit organisations withdraw 'Punjab bandh' call

Chandigarh, June 12: The call for a Punjab bandh on Monday issued by some Dalit organisations was withdrawn late Sunday evening after finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema met with morcha leaders in Mohali.

The bandh was called in response to the issues of post-matric scholarships and the demand for the registration of cases against individuals who fraudulently obtained Scheduled Caste (SC) certificates in order to obtain government jobs.

Cheema stated that a meeting with representatives of Dalit organisations on the problems raised by them would take place on Tuesday.

Harnek Singh, who is leading the Mohali morcha, has appealed to other Dalit organisations not to observe the bandh on Monday. Some Dalit organisations had previously called for a Punjab bandh on Monday in protest of post-matric scholarships and fake SC certificates.

Earlier Dalit organisation's leader claimed that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann did not meet the representatives of the SCs on June 9 even after giving the time. Following this, a protest was held near his residence in Chandigarh.

The NCSC also issued a notice to the Punjab government for allegedly providing a government job based on a fake caste certificate submitted by the father of popular Punjabi singer Amrit Maan.

According to a spokesperson, NCSC had received information through a news report that alleged that Sarbjeet Singh had submitted a false SC category certificate to get a government job.

“Sarbjeet Singh, who is a resident of the village Khara in tehsil Kotkapura of Faridkot district, had submitted a fake SC certificate to get a reserved SC job as a Maths teacher in the year 1989. The state government had sanctioned as many as 252 teaching posts across Punjab schools of which 25% seats were reserved for SC candidates," the commission said.
