Jalandhar West Assembly Bypoll 2024: 54.98% voter turnout recorded so far

Jalandhar West Assembly Bypoll 2024: Voting for Jalandhar West Assembly Bypoll 2024 took place on July 10, 2024. 

The Jalandhar West (Scheduled Caste-reserved) seat became vacant following the resignation of the sitting Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA, Sheetal Angural, who switched to the BJP on March 27 along with the then-AAP Lok Sabha MP from Jalandhar, Sushil Kumar Rinku.


District Election Officer cum Deputy Commissioner Dr Himanshu Aggarwal informed that 54.98% voter turnout was recorded in the bypoll of Jalandhar West Parliamentary Constituency on July 10, 2024. 

Dr Aggarwal stated that the bypoll was conducted peacefully with no incidents of violence during the voting process. 

He further informed that the counting of votes would be scheduled for July 13, 2024, starting at 8 am at Lyallpur Khalsa College for Women. 

He extended his gratitude to all voters, election staff, and security forces for ensuring the smooth and successful completion of the entire polling procedure in the constituency.

The campaigning for the high-stakes bypoll ended on Monday evening, with all major political parties making every attempt to woo voters.

The reserved seat contains 1.72 lakh voters from Dalit communities including Ravidassia, Valmiki, and Bhagat. It has the biggest concentration of Bhagat community members in Punjab, with approximately 20% of the electorate.
