PTC Web Desk: Sri Akal Takht Sahib is the highest temporal seat of the authority for Sikhs and the position of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is an esteemed position in the Sikh community.

The word "Jathedar" means the "head" or "leader" of a jatha (group) or organisation. The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds a significant authority and is considered the highest temporal authority for Sikhs.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar district of Punjab is one of the five Takhts in Sikhism. It was established by Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Sikh Guru, in 1606.

Sri Akal Takht Sahib not only serves as the seat of temporal power, but is also responsible for addressing and adjudicating matters of social, political, and religious importance within the Sikh community.

Know how Jathedar is appointed?

The Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is appointed by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), which is the representative body responsible for managing Sikh gurdwaras and promoting Sikh religious affairs.

The SGPC invites nominations from various Sikh organisations and influential Sikh personalities for the position of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The SGPC then forms a committee comprising its members and representatives from Sikh organisations. This committee reviews the nominations and shortlists potential candidates based on their knowledge of Sikhism, adherence to Sikh principles, and their ability to lead and represent the Sikh community effectively.

The shortlisted candidates' names are then presented before the SGPC General House for deliberation and voting. The General House, comprising elected representatives, discusses the nominations and decides on the appointment through a majority vote.

Once the SGPC General House approves the appointment, an installation ceremony is organised at Sri Akal Takht Sahib. During this ceremony, the newly appointed Jathedar takes an oath of office and assumes the responsibilities of the position.

Various factors such as the candidate's knowledge of Sikh scriptures, understanding of Sikh traditions, and their commitment to Sikh principles are considered before the appointment of the Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
