Ludhiana ASI death: DSP rules out suicide, says cop died of 'accidental' self-inflicted gunshot

PTC News Desk: Fresh revelations have surfaced in death of Ludhiana Assistant Sub-Inspector case who reportedly died after committing suicide on Tuesday.

However, the police have now ruled out 'suicide' and termed it as an accident saying that he died of 'accidental' gunshot after pistol went off accidentally.

The DSP of Ludhiana has issued a statement describing the incident as an accident and not suicide. DSP Varinder Singh Khosa said that preliminary investigation does not indicates suicide. He said, “The gun went off accidentally and hit the ASI. So far, the evidence suggests it was an accident. However, a detailed investigation is underway, and further action will be taken based on the findings.”

According to DSP Khosa, the deceased has been identified as ASI Teerth Singh (50), a resident of Kelpur village in Ludhiana. He was posted as a Miscellaneous Store Keeper (MSK) at the DIG Range office.

At around 4 a.m., while he was inside his quarters, two other police personnel were also on duty nearby. Initial questioning revealed that Teerth Singh was cleaning his service revolver when it accidentally discharged, striking him in the head and killing him on the spot.

DSP Khosa further stated that the post-mortem report and forensic analysis will reveal how and from what distance the bullet was fired. “Only the post-mortem findings will determine whether it was purely an accident or something else,” he said.

DSP Khosa mentioned that although some media reports claimed suicide, the investigation so far has found no such evidence. “Statements of all personnel have been recorded, and the facts currently point clearly to an accidental firing. There is no indication of suicide at this stage,” he said.

The deceased’s wife is a homemaker and resides in Kelpur village. Police informed that Teerth Singh has three children — one son and two daughters — who live in Canada and have been notified about the incident.

The DSP added that the wife’s statement is also being recorded, and further steps will be taken accordingly. The post-mortem will be conducted once the children return from abroad.
