Ludhiana youth murdered in Canada: Murder suspect a neighbour; family seeks justice
PTC Web Desk: In a tragic incident, 22-year-old Gursees Singh, a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, was brutally murdered in Canada. The young student, who had moved to Canada just four months ago for higher studies, was fatally stabbed in his rented home on Queen Street, Sarnia, Ontario, on December 1.
Notably, Gursees Singh was pursuing a postgraduate degree in business at Lambton College after completing his graduation from Punjab College of Technical Education (PCTE), Baddowal. On the night of the incident, Gursees was allegedly attacked by his neighbour, 36-year-old Crossley Hunter, who shared the same apartment complex.
According to the Sarnia police, the two had a heated argument in the kitchen before Hunter stabbed Gursees multiple times. The police have charged Hunter with second-degree murder but stated that the attack does not appear to be racially motivated.
Gursees’ father, Charanjit Singh, claimed that his son was attacked while he was asleep. He said the accused might have been under the influence of drugs. Charanjit Singh, who owns a packaging material manufacturing unit in Ludhiana, revealed that Gursees had spoken to his family just hours before his death. He described his son as being in high spirits, planning to reunite the family in Canada soon.
The news of Gursees’ death left his family shattered. His mother was admitted to a hospital after going into shock. The family, which resides in Ludhiana’s Phase-7, Focal Point, Chandigarh Road, is now appealing to the Indian government for assistance in repatriating the body and financial aid. Charanjit mentioned that the family had exhausted their savings to fund Gursees’ education and relocation to Canada.
Lambton College has stepped in to support the grieving family by coordinating arrangements for Gursees’ funeral and repatriation. In addition, students and members of the local community have launched an online fundraiser to provide financial assistance to the family.
The Sarnia police reported that they were informed of the incident at 4.59 am on December 1. Initially, the accused claimed self-defense, but subsequent investigations revealed inconsistencies in his statement. The authorities are conducting further investigations to uncover the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal attack.
