PM Modi security breach case: 7 officials including one SP, two DSPs suspended

PTC News Desk: The Punjab police have suspended seven officers, including one Superintendent of Police (SP) and two Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSP), for the security lapse during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state on January 5, 2022.

The Prime Minister was on his way to a rally in Ferozepur on February 5, 2022, when farmers blocked his path. The Prime Minister's convoy was delayed for approximately 20 minutes.

So far in this case, the suspended officers include the then-SP Ferozepur Gurvinder Singh Sanga, DSP Parson Singh, DSP Jagdish Kumar, Inspector Tejinder Singh, Balwinder Singh, Jaswant Singh, and ASI Rakesh Kumar.

According to a letter from the state DGP, the order of suspension is dated November 22.

Previously, SP Gurvinder Singh Sanga, who was on duty when PM Modi's convoy's security was breached in Ferozepur on January 5, 2022, was suspended. Gurvinder Sanga was the Superintendent of Police in Ferozepur at the time of the incident.

Following the incident, a thorough investigation was launched, and action has now been taken in the case from last year.

The Supreme Court stated in August that a five-member committee appointed by it determined that Ferozepur SSP failed to discharge his duties, despite the fact that sufficient forces were available during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Punjab on January 5.

While reading from the committee's report, a bench of Chief Justice NV Ramana and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli stated that the committee, headed by a former top court judge, Justice Indu Malhotra, stated that an oversight committee for periodic revision of the 'Blue Book' should be formed.

"The Ferozepur SSP failed to discharge his duty to maintain law and order. He failed to do this even though sufficient force was available and even though he was informed two hours in advance that the Prime Minister would enter that route."
