Punjab AAP MLA Gajjan Majra in judicial custody in bank fraud case 'enjoying VIP treatment’ at Patiala hospital

Patiala, June 12: In a surprising development, Punjab AAP MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra, who is in judicial custody over a Rs 40 crore bank fraud case, has reportedly been residing in the air-conditioned super specialty ward of Government Rajindra Hospital for over a month. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) recently opposed his interim bail plea in the Supreme Court.

Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra was admitted to Rajindra Hospital on May 11 on the recommendation of jail doctors. Patiala Central Jail Superintendent MS Sidhu confirmed the MLA's judicial custody but refrained from commenting on his health, stating it was under the doctors' purview. Despite repeated inquiries, hospital officials have provided little information.

Sources said access to Gajjan Majra was heavily restricted. He said no one was allowed to go near him.

Social media buzz has intensified around this issue. Social activist Manik Goyal posted on X (formerly Twitter) about the MLA’s peculiar situation. Goyal noted that Gajjan Majra was initially brought to the cardiology department on May 11 but was discharged on June 6 as doctors couldn't justify his continued stay. The next day, he was admitted to the Urology department. Both departments are in the air-conditioned Super Specialty branch, unlike the rest of the hospital.

The Enforcement Directorate has been pursuing Gajjan Majra in connection with a money-laundering case linked to the bank fraud. The Supreme Court recently deferred hearing his interim bail plea to June 18 after the AAP MLA failed to respond to the ED’s affidavit justifying his arrest. The ED's opposition to his bail is based on the severity of the charges and potential influence over the investigation.

Gajjan Majra’s arrest on November 6, 2023, followed a series of raids by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in May 2022, which targeted premises linked to him. These raids were part of a broader investigation into the Rs 40 crore bank fraud.

Meanwhile, Dr Rajnish Raj said AAP MLA Jaswant Singh Gajjan Majra was admitted to the hospital on June 7 due to urinary problems. He was experiencing an enlarged prostate and frequent urination. The doctors conducted several tests, and results were expected soon, after which further information would be provided.

He said the MLA was also dealing with diabetes, blood pressure issues, and cervical problems. "Gajjan Majra is not receiving any VIP treatment and is being kept in a general ward," he claimed.
