Punjab arms smugglers nabbed in ‘filmy style’ by Madhya Pradesh police after escape from custody

PTC Web Desk: In a dramatic and cinematic-style operation, the Madhya Pradesh Police successfully arrested two escaped arms smugglers from Shahkot, Jalandhar, nearly a week after they fled custody. The operation, executed by the Khargone district police, involved undercover surveillance and elaborate disguises, including a police officer posing as a rickshaw puller and another selling sugarcane juice.

The suspects, identified as Veerpal Singh and Jagvinder Singh, were initially arrested on May 30 for possessing illegal country-made pistols and live cartridges. However, later that night, the duo escaped from the Jaitapur police station.

Given the seriousness of the escape, the Superintendent of Police (SP) formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to track the fugitives. Investigations revealed that the accused had fled toward Punjab via a truck on the Agra-Mumbai Highway.

Based on intelligence inputs, the SIT traced the duo to Jalandhar. The team divided into two groups—one coordinated search efforts with the local police, while the other operated undercover. For nearly a week, officers in disguise monitored the suspects. One officer operated as a rickshaw driver, and another sold juice to gather ground-level intel without raising suspicion.

The strategy paid off when both fugitives were successfully apprehended without incident, bringing an end to their short-lived escape.
