Chandigarh, December 19: Amid agitation by contractual staff, Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua on Monday held a meeting with members of the Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers' Union. He assured them of regularising their services in a phased manner.

On the other hand, the union said any decision on ending the stir would be taken after the state committee meeting on December 20. The strike would continue for the time being.


Sources said the government had sought a month's time to fulfill the demand.

Earlier, Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua gave a patient hearing to all demands of the Punjab Roadways PUNBUS and PRTC Contract Workers Union and directed the Principal Secretary of the Punjab Transport Department to consider these demands sympathetically.


Accepting an important demand of the union, the Punjab Chief Secretary issued orders to the Secretary Transport to review the cases of employees, who were fired for any reason and do justice to all.

Besides, Vijay Kumar Janjua issued instructions to officials of the Transport Department to look into the issue of 5 per cent annual increase in the salary of contractual workers of Punjab Roadways PUNBUS and PRTC. Apart from this, a decision was taken to review the conditions for blacklisting the conductors.

Punjab Chief Secretary Vijay Kumar Janjua gave strict directions to officials of the Transport Department that no private bus should be allowed to run illegally, and in this regard orders should be issued to the general managers of various depots to keep a strict vigil.
