PTC Web Desk:  A shocking case of domestic violence has surfaced from Kothe village in Gurdaspur, Punjab, where a woman was seen brutally assaulting her elderly mother-in-law. The disturbing incident was captured in a 1.19-minute video, filmed by the victim’s grandson, which has now gone viral on social media.

The video shows the daughter-in-law dragging the elderly woman by her hair, slapping her, and repeatedly hitting her with a steel glass. At one point, the victim was seen gasping for breath as her daughter-in-law continued to attack her, even attempting to choke her. Despite witnessing the assault, the grandson,  who kept recording , did not intervene to stop his mother, although he was heard saying “don’t hit.”

The footage further reveals the daughter-in-law abusing her mother-in-law, calling her derogatory names such as “kutti” (bitch), while the elderly woman cried out in pain. The daughter-in-law also attempted to beat her with the victim’s slipper, and when unsuccessful, slapped her twice across the face, leaving the old woman clutching her head in distress.

The exact reason for the assault remains unclear. Family members have refused to speak to the media, stating the issue has been “settled” internally. Police sources confirmed that the elderly victim herself has declined to file a formal complaint, despite being approached.

Nevertheless, the matter has reached the Tibber police station in Gurdaspur, where officials have begun investigating. The police confirmed that the viral video is being treated as evidence and will form part of the inquiry.

Meanwhile, the Punjab State Women Commission has taken strong cognizance of the incident. The chairperson of the commission has written to the SSP, Gurdaspur, directing that a senior police official be appointed to investigate the case. The SSP has been instructed to submit a detailed action-taken report by October 2 under provisions of the Punjab State Women Commission Act, 2001.

The commission has further demanded that the investigation be carried out thoroughly, given the severity of the assault and the public outrage triggered by the viral video.
