Punjab MC elections: State Election Commission faces contempt petition over delay in poll notification

PTC Web Desk:  The matter concerning the Punjab Municipal Corporation and Municipal Council elections has once again reached the Punjab and Haryana High Court after the Punjab State Election Commission failed to issue a notification within the two-week deadline set by the Supreme Court.

As per the Supreme Court's directions, the Punjab State Election Commission was required to issue the election notification within two weeks. However, despite the Punjab Government notifying the elections for nine Municipal Corporations and 87 Municipal Councils on November 22, the Election Commission has not yet issued the necessary notification to schedule the elections.

The two-week deadline, as set by the Supreme Court, ended on November 26. In response, petitioner Beant Kumar, through his lawyer Bisham Kinger, has filed a contempt petition against the EC for failing to comply with the court's orders.
